Young Children And Worship

First Presbyterian Church of Howell

2006-2007

We welcome you and your children to the Children and Worship center.  We encourage parents to sit in for a session or two so you can see what goes on in this worship center once the door is closed.  You are welcome at any time.

The goal of the program is to provide a place for young children to experience and praise God at their level.  Our activities are based on adult worship, but modified for young worshipers.  Your children will learn and use many of the phrases, rituals and songs used in the adult, “big” church worship.  They will recognize them and be more comfortable when they worship with you and the rest of the family in the sanctuary.

We sing, we pray, we learn about God through Bible stories and reading His Word, and we give God our offerings.  We follow the same format each week.  After each Bible story, the children have a chance to play with clay, play with the wooden story figures, puzzles, paint, chalk, or markers.  This year we will use a few simple crafts that relate to some of the Bible stories.    Through these activities the children have an opportunity to express, in their own way, what they heard from God’s word and it gives them a break from sitting and listening.  The “hands on”, visual activities reinforce the lesson of the day.

We also have a “feast” or snack time with juice each week.  We will post the Bible story that we will learn each week outside the door, along with the prayer of the month and song of praise.  We encourage you to ask your child about the story and ask them to tell you the prayer or sing the song. We will send a copy of the monthly prayer home so you can practice with them. We will also be learning the Lord’s Prayer, a line a week or so. Let them lead the prayer before a meal and show you how they talk to God.

We hope that the Young Children and Worship center is a place where each child can come and experience God’s great love.  If you have any comments or questions on this program please speak to one of us.
